Hello and welcome to the best movie and TV trailers of the week!
This week brings us a brand new peek at BRIGHTBURN, the up and coming horror movie from SLITHER head honcho James Gunn. Yeah, that's right, not GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, SLITHER. Back before this guy became known for his snazzy tongue-in-cheek superheroes, he was a renowned genre director, starting with his Lloyd Kaufman produced TROMEO AND JULET, leading up to his Elizabeth Banks-led take on NIGHT OF THE CREEPS. I'm usually not a huge fan of the man himself — although I do have a soft spot for SLITHER — but I have to say, this look at the upcoming flick seems like a better film than what the initial teaser promised. Gunn, you had my curiosity, but now, you have my attention.
Also on the docket is a brand new trailer for Dome Karukoski's TOLKIEN, an upcoming biography pic about — you guessed it — J. R. R. Tolkien, the iconic author who penned such legendary pieces of work as THE LORD OF THE RINGS, THE HOBBIT, and THE SILMARILLION. Played by Nicholas Hoult, TOLKIEN tells the story of the author's formative years as he finds friendship, love and acceptance amongst a group of like-minded outsiders at school. Does it look like a typical cheesy bio pic? Yeah, pretty much. Am I definitely going to catch this one on the big screen? You can be sure of it.
SHAZAM looks hysterical, LATE NIGHT looks like a breath of fresh air, and DARK PHOENIX looks…interesting. There's also brand new trailers for FRAMING JOHN DELOREAN, BULLETS OF JUSTICE, SWEET PAIN, MASTER Z: IP MAN LEGACY, and more!
As for TV trailers, there's new trailers for GAME OF THRONES, Hulu's THE ACT, GOOD OMENS, WARRIOR, NOS4A2, AMERICAN GODS season 2, KILLING EVE season 2, THE SPANISH PRINCESS, MOTHERLAND: FORT SALEM, I LOVE YOU NOW DIE, PERPETUAL GRACE LTD, and the second season of COBRA KAI.
The best trailer of the week award goes to THE ACT, co-created by Nick Antosca (CHANNEL ZERO) and Michelle Dean (MOMMY DEAD AND DEAREST). Starring Patricia Arquette and Joey King, THE ACT is being presented as an anthology series on stranger than fiction true crime stories that are based on real life events. The first season follows Gypsy Blanchard (King) as a girl trying to escape the toxic relationship she has with her overprotective mother (Arquette). Based on Antosca's previous work on CHANNEL ZERO as well as HANNIBAL, I'd say we're going to have quite the little show on our hands. This trailer makes me even more excited for this upcoming spectacle. I'm counting down the days until March 20th.
