Mystery Men may have underperformed at the box office during its initial release but it has garnered a cult following over the years that has allowed it to stand the test of time. Some fans have thought a sequel would be a blast to see and one of the film’s stars, Ben Stiller, would love to make it happen.
During an interview with ComicBook.com, Stiller was asked if he would be interested in reprising his role as Mr. Furious in a sequel to Mystery Men. The actor admitted that he has never really considered the idea but he would love to return, especially if it meant working with the film’s stellar ensemble cast again. Here is what he had to say about the prospect of a sequel:
“That’s the first I’m hearing of it, but sure. I’m all for it. I had fun doing it… Yeah, it would be a blast. It was a really, really fun cast. And there’s still some rage and fury inside me somewhere, I think.”
Mystery Men follows a team of lesser superheroes with impressive powers who are required to save the day. In addition to Stiller, the film also stars Hank Azaria, William H. Macy, Greg Kinnear, Janeane Garofalo, Paul Reubens, Kel Mitchell, Wes Studi, Geoffrey Rush, Lena Olin, Eddie Izzard, Claire Forlani, and Tom Waits. The film was met with generally positive reviews (61% fresh at Rotten Tomatoes) but it didn’t dare all that well at the box office. The movie grossed $29.7 million at the domestic box office on a $68 million budget, thus making it a box office bomb. The years have been kind to Mystery Men though and it has since developed a substantial cult following as a pretty underrated take on the superhero genre.
