Sometimes there are movies which just can't catch a break and you can't help but feel sorry for, and TRIPLE FRONTIER is certainly one of them. Once set to be helmed by Kathryn Bigelow with actors such as Tom Hanks, Johnny Depp, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Will Smith expressing interest, TRIPLE FRONTIER was intended to be Bigelow's follow-up to THE HURT LOCKER, but once ZERO DARK THIRTY moved forward instead, the film was put on hold before Bigelow eventually left it behind altogether. J.C. Chandor (ALL IS LOST) then took over the film which Tom Hardy, Channing Tatum, and Mahershala Ali were set to star in, but a month before production was set to begin, both Hardy and Tatum departed the project, as did Paramount Pictures. Ruh oh.
TRIPLE FRONTIER was seemingly shelved for good, until Netflix came calling and revived the project and looked to Ben Affleck to take the lead. Although Affleck was never officially attached to the film, it seems that J.C. Chandor and Netflix will have to look elsewhere for someone to star as it has been reported that the actor has dropped out in order to take some time to focus on his wellness and his family. Can't blame him for that. Despite it's long and troubled history, we don't know all that much about TRIPLE FRONTIER other than it will be set in the "notorious border zone between Paraguay, Argentina, and Brazil where the Iguazu and Parana rivers converge — making “la triple frontera” difficult to monitor and a haven for organized crime." When word first emerged that Netflix was looking to offer Ben Affleck one of the lead roles, it was also mentioned that the other role may go to Casey Affleck, but there's no word on whether the younger Affeck is still circling the project.
Ben Affleck will next be seen in JUSTICE LEAGUE, which is set to hit theaters on November 17, 2017.
