Back in August word came down from The House of Mouse that sadly Sony and Disney's Spider-Man relationship was at an end. With money at the heart of the matter, Sony made the decision to take back the webslinger and remove him from the MCU. This came as a huge blow for fans as Spider-Man's induction into the MCU had been met with almost universal acclaim. No one was more disheartened than Peter Parker/Spider-Man star Tom Holland, who expressed his sadness and frustration at the D23 expo. While promoting his new film ONWARD, Holland said he was "devastated" and that it had been "a tough week." Well it seems as if Holland may have been more vital in keeping Spider-Man in the MCU than we once thought.
In an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Holland revealed to the talk show host that while at D23 he sent an email to Disney CEO Bob Iger thanking him for the opportunity to play Spider-Man. Iger replied, prompting Holland to request that Iger reach out via phone if he got the opportunity. Even though Holland is a moviestar, Bob Iger is a busy man, so it came as a bit of a shock to Holland when Iger actually called him back. What resulted had a little to do with what Homer Simpson calls "the cause and solution to all life's problems." Or in other words, alcohol.
You see when Bob Iger reached out to Tom Holland he just so happened to be at a pub with his family on trivia night. Not surprisingly, the actor had had a few pints by the time Iger called. Emboldened by liquid courage, Holland began an impassioned plea for Iger to repair the damage with Sony. “I weeped. I was really emotional because I felt like it was all coming to an end.” Well somehow Holland's entreaties worked because as we know, Sony and Disney patched things up and Spider-Man will be returning for another solo film and at least one more Marvel teamup film.
Now I'm not saying that beer was solely responsible for keeping Spider-Man in the MCU. Obviously, Tom Holland's words had a significant effect. However, more than a few problems have been smoothed out due to the influence of that golden concoction. Sometimes all you need is a cold brew or two and a sympathetic ear.
