Yabba-Dabba-Doo! Fox is rocking and rolling with The Flintstones spinoff Bedrock! According to Deadline, Fox is ordering a pilot presentation of the animated series, with an all-star cast set to take the Stone Age by storm! Being fitted for loincloths are Elizabeth Banks (Cocaine Bear, Charlie’s Angels) as Pebbles, the adult daughter of Fred and Wilma, Stephen Root (Office Space, O Brother, Where Art Thou?) as Fred, Amy Sedaris (Strangers with Candy, BoJack Horseman) as Wilma, Nicole Byer (Wipeout, Big City Greens) as Betty, Jo Lo Truglio (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The State) as Barney, and Manny Jacinto (The Good Place, Top Gun: Maverick) as Bam Bam. News about Fox’s Bedrock animated series dropped two years ago!
Designed for primetime, the Bedrock animated series is an adult comedy continuing the story of the Stone Age family. Deadline writes that Bedrock “catches up with the Flintstone family two decades later, with Fred on the brink of retirement and 20-something Pebbles embarking on her own career. As the Stone Age gives way to a shiny and enlightened new Bronze Age, the residents of Bedrock will find this evolution harder than a swing from Bamm-Bamm’s club.”
In addition to playing Pebbles, Banks is executive producing alongside Man Handelman for Brownstone Productions and Sam Register. Lindsay Kerns (Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, DC Super Hero Girls) wrote and co-executive produces Bedrock, with Lon Zimmet writing and executive producing.
In The Flintstones canon, Pebbles grows up, finds a job working for an advertising company, marries her childhood friend, Bamm-Bamm, and moves to Hollyrock, a fictional version of Hollywood. This future is all according to ABC’s 1993 made-for-television animated movie. For now, there’s no telling if the new series will find Pebbles in the same position.
“Long before the Simpsons and Springfield, the Griffins and Quahog or even when the Belchers started serving burgers on Ocean Avenue, there were the Flintstones and Bedrock,” said Michael Thorn, President, Entertainment, Fox Entertainment, in April 2021. “Their imprint on the animation universe is undeniable and the idea of adapting it for today’s audience is a challenge we here at Fox are very much looking forward to taking on with Warner Bros., Elizabeth, and Lindsay. No pressure whatsoever, really.”
“The Flintstones are the first family of primetime animation,” added Peter Girardi, Executive Vice President of Alternative Programming at Warner Bros. Animation. “Elizabeth and Lindsay have a brilliant take on these characters, and Fox and Brownstone are the perfect partners to bring them back to primetime. This is going to rock, sorry.”
