Inspiration can come in different ways. Sometimes it comes as a jolt to the brain or it can come in a million little bites.
Yesterday night, The Hollywood Reporter talked about a recent outbreak of Bed Bugs at the Toronto Film Festival which you can read right here . The infestation was first reported to be at the Scotiabank Theatre, the main venue for press/industry screenings at the festival. Sucks to hear that. Audiences are going to have seatmates with the critters through each flick and it’s no fun when you’re stuck hearing a thousand little f*ckers nipping at your flesh. “Before bed bugs becomes today’s meme: We’re on it, we’re talking to Cineplex and are planning for an itch-free (festival) ,” said festival co-director Cameron Bailey. The little buggers were becoming such a problem that eventually pest control was called in to take hold of the situation.
But now those miniature bed beasts have found their way on a one way trip from Toronto to Hollywood. It seems that New Line Cinema was trying to develop a little horror flick called BEDBUGS back in 04. The flick even had a spec script written by Carter Blanchard. The script surrounded “a small town being infested with a species of killer bugs that come at night and burrow inside a person, killing them from the inside. ” Juicy stuff. I love films about burrowing bugs and this sounds like a little picnic of terror.
New Line Cinema recently gave the rights back to Producers Beau Flynn and Tripp Vinson. Contrafilm, the film’s production company, will then handle the next step in hopes of reactivating and eventually developing the film. So what say you? Do bug films get under your skin? Personally I’d love to see more bug films in the coming years. The last film with Bug in the title wasn’t even about bugs. Strike down below and let us know what you think.
