After the insane success of THE LION KING 3D (it’s now the number nine grossing film of all time) you can bet that Disney’s been scrambling to get all of their other hits back in theaters. The next one will be BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, and Disney just released the first poster to promote it.
Originally released in 1991, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST is a classic “tale as old as time” that follows the adventures of Belle, a bright young woman imprisoned in the castle of a mysterious beast and his enchanted staff, who must learn the most important lesson of all – that true beauty comes from within. BEAUTY AND THE BEAST was the first animated film ever nominated for an Academy Award® for Best Picture, earning an additional five Oscar® nominations and winning two. It has grossed $380.4 million worldwide.
I bet they bump another 100 million on that number, at least.
Say what you will, but BEAUTY AND THE BEAST is one of the best Disney movies around, and it’s incredibly smart for the house the mouse built to rerelease these films. Adults who loved it as kids will go see it again, people who were too young to see it the first time around and only knew it through home video will jump at the chance to see it in theaters. 3D or not, I wish more studios would take note from this, and start rereleasing their old classics in limited runs.
BEAUTY AND THE BEAST hits theaters January 13, 2012. Here are the dates for the rest of Disney’s planned 3D rereleases.
FINDING NEMO – September 14, 2012
MONSTERS INC. – January 18, 2013
THE LITTLE MERMAID – September 13, 2013
