Universal has been developing a big-screen adaptation of Battlestar Galactica for quite some time, and THR has now reported that the project has taken a big step forward as Simon Kinberg (DARK PHOENIX) has signed on to write the project as well as produce it alongside Dylan Clark.

"Battlestar Galactica is one of the holy grails in science fiction, and I couldn't be more excited about bringing something new to the franchise, while honoring what's made it so iconic and enduring," said Kinberg in a statement. "I'm so grateful that Dylan and my partners at Universal have trusted me with this incredible universe." Battlestar Galactica arrived in the wake of STAR WARS as a short-lived TV series created by Glen A. Larson. The series followed the last remnants of a human civilization fleeing from the Cylons, a race of intelligent machines seeking to wipe them out. Although the original Battlestar Galactica series didn't last long, it quickly developed a passionate fan-base who kept the franchise alive until it was rebooted by Ronald D. Moore for a highly successful series that ran for four seasons. The feature-film adaptation of the series has been in the works for quite some time, with directors such as Bryan Singer and Francis Lawrence at one point attached to direct. In addition to the new film, another rebooted Battlestar Galactica TV series is in the works from Sam Esmail (Mr. Robot) for the Peacock streaming service.

Simon Kinberg's next project is THE 355, a female-led spy thriller that Kinberg directed and co-wrote. The upcoming film stars Jessica Chastain, Lupita Nyong'o, Penelope Cruz, Bingbing Fan, and Diane Kruger as a group of top female agents from government agencies around the globe who must try to stop an organization from acquiring a deadly weapon to send the world into chaos. THE 355 is slated to hit theaters on January 15, 2021.
