Although it's been rumored that the character will appear in BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE, the biggest surprise in the latest trailer for the upcoming film was the reveal of Doomsday, and production designer Patrick Tatopoulos seemingly confirmed that the creature is indeed Doomsday (or, at the very least, a version of the Superman-killer) during a recent interview with the French magazine Premiere.
We are able to tell a story in a fresh way. Doomsday is an evolution essentially. Fans may be aware of the death of Superman story, but this is handled in such a new way.
When the film is called Batman v or versus Superman, it really has a lot of levels to the meaning. Superman isn't just killed off at the end of something. We see how he evolves as part of Lex's plan to protect the world. Seeing the Superman we know, be gone, and then replaced with this reproduction is really going to make fans think of how we look at these super beings. It was especially interesting to figure out, how would you create Superman from Zod…then how would that involve into Doomsday.
Some fans have complained that the trailer was a bit heavy on spoilers, but Tatopoulos told the magazine that "those feeling they may know too much this early are going to be in for a true surprise," and teased that there is a "larger threat" at play. He went on to say the "timeframe of how things fall into place will surprise fans" and that "Doomsday isn't just the final act." Tatopoulos was also asked about the "larger threat," but said "That's something to find out on March 25th."
I still think it's way too early to be bringing Doomsday into the mix, especially if he just ends up being killed off, but it won't make or break the film for me, and I suppose Superman could always chuck him into space, only for him to return in a future movie. Any guesses as to what the bigger threat could be, and what are your thoughts on Doomsday appearing in BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE?
BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE will be in theaters on March 25, 2016.
