Barack Obama’s favorite movies of 2018 include Annihilation, Black Panther

Every critic and news outlet is putting out their best of the year lists for 2018, but there’s one individual, neither critic nor reporter, whose list everyone keeps their eyes peeled for – Barack Obama. The former president makes a yearly tradition of composing his lists of favorite books, movies and songs for the year, and he recently put out his selections for the best of 2018. His list for the best movies of the year is what we’re focusing on here, and to no surprise, 44 has a pretty outstanding taste in movies.

“As 2018 draws to a close, I’m continuing a favorite tradition of mine and sharing my year-end lists,” he wrote on Facebook. “It gives me a moment to pause and reflect on the year through the books, movies, and music that I found most thought-provoking, inspiring, or just plain loved. It also gives me a chance to highlight talented authors, artists, and storytellers – some who are household names and others who you may not have heard of before. Here’s my best of 2018 list – I hope you enjoy reading, watching, and listening.”

Without further ado, here are his favorite movies of the year.

  • Annihilation
  • Black Panther
  • BlacKkKlansman
  • Blindspotting
  • Burning
  • The Death of Stalin
  • Eighth Grade
  • If Beale Street Could Talk
  • Leave No Trace
  • Minding the Gap
  • The Rider
  • Roma
  • Shoplifters
  • Support the Girls
  • Won’t You Be My Neighbor

As I said, the man has some impeccable taste. He’s got a big blockbuster on there (BLACK PANTHER), some popular indies (EIGHTH GRADE, ROMA) and some smaller movies you may have missed but should definitely see (THE DEATH OF STALIN, LEAVE NO TRACE). Also, one of his favorites also made one of our own best of 2018 selections, ANNIHILATION (selected by Paul Shirey), so isn’t that nice?

He must be loving all the free time he has to watch movies and read books on the beach. Something tells me running the country doesn’t give you much time to go to the theater.
