The John Wick franchise has been driving in full force since its humble beginnings as a mid-budget action movie that re-established Keanu Reeves as an action star. Lionsgate is bent on turning the John Wick movies into a massive multimedia franchise. First up, there’s a prequel series about the Winston character coming with The Continental, but that’s not all. It was announced today that Ian McShane will be reprising the character in the Ana De Armas-led spinoff, Ballerina, with Underworld director Len Wiseman at the helm.
Ballerina follows the story of a woman with her own particular set of skills as she sets out on a revenge mission against the hitmen who killed her family. The Hollywoodr Reporter was the first to break the news that McShane will reprise his role in the spin-off.
Shay Hatten, who penned John Wick chapters 3 and 4, is returning to write this entry in the universe. Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, and John Wick director Chad Stahelski are on board as producers. Brady Fujikawa and Chelsea Kujawa are overseeing the project for Lionsgate.
Lionsgate is also recently reported to be looking at proposals for a John Wick video game with a massive interactive experience. Lionsgate CEO, Jon Feltheimer, has said, “I don’t want to get ahead of myself here, but we believe there is a big AAA game to be made out of ‘John Wick.’ We have been fielding proposals. We certainly are interested in moving that forward, but I don’t want to say anything more about that at this time.”
Ian McShane and Winston will next be seen in John Wick 4, which arrives in theaters on March 23, 2023.
