After a lot of starts and stops, BAD BOYS FOR LIFE is coming ever so much closer to fruition. Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are still down to bring the ruckus, and the movie hired two new directors in January. Now we know when we can expect to see the baddest of boys back on the big screen as Sony Pictures has secured a release date of January 17, 2020, for their return.

Many feared the movie wouldn’t happen when the movie was taken off the calendar sometime last year, but there’s more focus now with directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah on board. Sony seems very committed to getting this thing released, especially seeing as their spinoff show with Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba is on its way to us. I’m sure a BAD BOYS extended universe was not something we were expecting, but I think it’s time we all keep an open mind.
As for the release schedule, BAD BOYS is in a prime slot to succeed, given that no other movies will pose a threat to it during the normally quiet month. STAR WARS EPISODE IX will be about a month old at that point, and there probably won’t be another major action title to steal BOYS’ thunder.
In other scheduling news, Sony is putting out another movie very similar to BAD BOYS called YOU ARE MY FRIEND, a biopic about Mister Rogers starring Tom Hanks. The movie is slated for October 18, 2019, signifying they have hopes the movie could be an Oscar contender – at the very least for Hanks’ performance. The actor has been shafted at the ceremony over the last few years, not securing noms for great work like CAPTAIN PHILLIPS, SAVING MR. BANKS, SULLY or THE POST.

As for BAD BOYS, I can’t say I’m on the edge of my seat for this move. I’ve never been a fan of the first two, remembering them more as mainstays on TBS and TNT. But they have their fans, of whom I assume are anxious for more Smith/Lawrence action. We will see if it was worth the wait in about a year and a half!
BAD BOYS FOR LIFE arrives on January 17, 2020, and the basically-a-prequel YOU ARE MY FRIEND will come before on October 18, 2019.
