Back to the Future VHS tape sells for a massive amount of money at auction

Back to the Future is considered by many to be one of the most perfect movies ever made so I should not be surprised that a collector’s item being auctioned off, which was once owned by one of the film’s stars, sold for a massive amount of money.

Per KTLA, an original copy of a sealed VHS tape of Back to the Future sold for $75,000 at the first-ever VHS-only auction held by Texas-based Heritage Auction. The copy was once owned by Thomas Wilson, who played Biff Tannen in the film, and the VHS of Back to the Future was one of 260 sealed VHS tapes available on the auction block. Other titles that sold were The Goonies, which was picked up for $50,000, a promotional copy of Top Gun, Jaws, and Ghostbusters. The copy of Back to the Future that was auctioned off also came with a signed note from Wilson that joked about the actor not being able to find a VHS player to watch the film.

Back to the Future was first released on VHS back in 1986 for a price of $79.95. This was a much different time in history when VHS tapes were a hot commodity. As of this writing, the bid for the Back to the Future VHS tape makes it one of the top-earned VHS tapes ever sold at auction. Fans of the franchise will also have a chance to own another piece of its film history later this month. Entertainment Memorabilia Live Auction will be auctioning off Marty’s pink hoverboard from Back to the Future Part II, which could earn between $80,000 and $120,000.

There is no denying that Back to the Future is one of the most beloved films ever made. Released in 1985, the film became a critical and box office success and has since gone on to define the time period it was released while also standing the test of time for generations that continue to discover it. With a cast led by Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly and Christopher Llyod as Doc Brown, the time-traveling classic paved the way for two sequels,1989’s Back to the Future Part II and 1990’s Back to the Future Part III.
