“Life is short. Anything could happen, and it usually does, so there is no point in sitting around thinking about all the ifs, ands, and buts. Everyone knows that there’s certain things that aren’t good for you, but there’s a fine line between enjoying yourself and being completely healthy,” Amy Winehouse once said before being taken from this world far too soon. On the back of those words to live by, I’m thrilled to report Focus Features‘ Amy Winehouse biopic, Back to Black, has a release date in the U.S. on May 10, 2024.
Back to Black is a never-before-seen glimpse into Amy Winehouse‘s early rise to fame and the release of her groundbreaking studio album, Back to Black. Told from Amy’s perspective, the film is an unapologetic look at the woman behind the phenomenon and the relationship that inspired one of the most legendary albums of all time.
Back to Black stars break-out actress Marisa Abela as Amy Winehouse. Jack O’Connell (Ferrari), Eddie Marsan (Fair Play), and Lesley Manville (Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris) also star as primary cast members. Sam Taylor-Johnson (Nowhere Boy, A Million Little Pieces, Hunters) directs from a script by Matt Greenhalgh following their 2009 partnership for Nowhere Boy.
Per the official press release for Back to Black:
Amy Winehouse is widely considered one of the greatest artists in recent history, selling more than 30 million records worldwide and generating more than 80 million monthly streams. Her acclaimed 2006 album, Back To Black, propelled her to global stardom, winning a (then) record-breaking 5 Grammy Awards, including Record Of The Year and Song of The Year for the single Rehab. Back to Black focuses on Amy’s extraordinary genius, creativity, and honesty that infused everything she did. A journey that took her from the craziness and color of 90’s Camden High Street to global adoration – and back again, Back to Black crashes through the looking glass of celebrity to watch this journey from behind the mirror, to see what Amy saw, to feel what she felt.
Amy Winehouse is as memorable as they come with her sultry vocals, gospel-like qualities, and stunning stage presence. Back to Black looks to celebrate her life, talent, and legacy. Sadly, Winehouse passed away on July 23, 2011, from alcohol poisoning. Rather than focus on her end, Back to Black celebrates her humble beginnings and lasting influence on the music industry.
The Back to Black release date falls on May 10, 2024.
