Poltergeist III (1988)
Director: Gary Sherman
Stars: Tom Skerritt, Nancy Allen, Heather O'Rourke
This weekend, the curse of THE RING transitions from your VHS player to the Internet in RINGS, so Awfully Good Movies is raising its glass to another horror franchise about killer ghosts coming out of your TV screen with POLTERGEIST III! After Tobe Hooper (or Steven Spielberg, depending on who you ask) scared the pants off us with POLTERGEIST, and its sequel overcame bad reviews to become another box office hit, MGM thought there was enough spirit left in the franchise for a third installment. But four months before the third flick was released, Heather O'Rourke died tragically at the age of 12, and people were talking more about the infamous "POLTERGEIST curse" that had now claimed four cast members of the franchise than they were about POLTERGEIST III. Who could blame them, though? With its muddled plot, unlikable characters, lack of scares, and a woeful lack of Craig T. Nelson, this movie will have you glad that those ghosts finally decided to stay dead after this one. Besides, if I want a movie about a skyscraper building being taken over by dastardly forces, then I'm just gonna stick with DIE HARD or GREMLINS 2: THE NEW BATCH, if you don't mind. I mean, does POLTERGEIST III end with one of the ghosts dressing like a woman and getting it on with Robert Picardo in a bathroom? No? Then why are we even having this conversation?
And if you want to dig up the skeletons in the Awfully Good Movies burial ground, then head towards the liiiiiinks…
