For years, Awesome Art We've Found Around The Net has been about two things only – awesome art and the artists that create it. With that in mind, we thought why not take the first week of the month to showcase these awesome artists even more? Welcome to “Awesome Artist We’ve Found Around The Net." In this column, we are focusing on one artist and the awesome art that they create, whether they be amateur, up and coming, or well established. The goal is to uncover these artists so even more people become familiar with them. We ask these artists a few questions to see their origins, influences, and more. If you are an awesome artist or know someone that should be featured, feel free to contact me at any time at [email protected].This month we are very pleased to bring you the awesome art of…
Anthony Petrie
Anthony Petrie is an award-winning poster artist and designer based in Los Angeles. His portfolio includes work across a broad range of mediums and he likes creating good design for good people. Anthony has been working professionally as a commercial artist for over 17 years, collaborating with some of the most prestigious brands in the world. His graphic design, illustration, and product designs can be seen everywhere from the entertainment and broadcasting industries to sports and athletic brands. You probably know him best from his work on screen-printed movie posters.
JoBlo: What got you started as an artist?
Petrie: Like a lot of artists in my generation, I grew up on a steady diet of comic books, video games, Robocop, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I was drawn to the inherent creativity and weirdness of 80’s popular culture. I started drawing consistently around the age of 5 and thankfully my parents were always really supportive of it. From then on, a career in art was always the path all the way through art school.
Who were some of your favorite artists growing up?
Comic books were a big influence for me early on, especially through the ’80s and early ’90s, probably starting with Art Adams, Barry Windsor Smith, and Jim Lee just to name a few. As I grew later on as an artist and designer, I was drawn more to Robert McGinnis, Al Parker and Sergio Toppi for illustration. I love historically multi-faceted designer/architects such as Charles and Ray Eames, Eero Saarinen, Tadeo Ando, Zaha Hadid and Isamu Nogichi. I can just keep listing names for all eternity.
Who do you really dig these days, follow on Instagram?
Here is an extremely diverse mix of some of my favorite contemporary artists Malika Favre, Tristan Eaton, James Jean, Katie Rodgers, Coop, Gabz, Richey Beckett, Christopher Lee, Brian Reedy, Jason Edmiston, Sam Larson, Soey Milk.
What advice would you have for budding artists today?
Don’t take non-specific unsolicited blanket advice from artists. One size does not fit all.
What should we be looking out for from you in the future?
I’m going to do my best to put out work that appeals more to my own taste in art. The kind of art I like isn’t necessarily the art I do, and I’m trying to make an effort to change that to some degree. And as always, keep an eye on my favorite co-conspirators: Bottleneck Gallery and Waxwork Records in the near future.
Being a fansite, we have to ask you… What are some of your favorite movies/TV shows of all time?
My favorite movies and TV shows list is an always changing and forever meandering stream, however, I’d say these are always the mainstays:
Movies: They Live, Monster Squad, Coming to America, Predator, Midsommar, Planet of the Apes (1968)
TV Shows: It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Hannibal, The Munsters, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2012 series)
