Nuno Sarnadas

Very early I revealed myself as being a very creative child who took advantage of all surfaces to draw, forcing my parents to watch closely all the time.

In my teens I broadened my horizons beyond drawing and now encompassing illustration and key art design. Studied at the School of Technology and Management, where I graduated as a Civil Engineer. Worked as such for ten years and after the economic crisis in 2008 I decided to pursue a career as a freelance visual artist, creating artwork for bands and key art for the entertainment industry.

Today I (mostly) spare the walls and now turn to sketch books as well as constantly trying and learning new styles and skills to keep creating art to the best of my abilities. Creativity, passion and versatility are words I live by.

JOBLO: What got you started as an artist?
NUNO: I remember being 4, 5 years old and sitting in front of the TV watching Spider-Man cartoons and at the same time drawing it repeatedly, so I would same my passion for the visual arts has been there since I can remember. But the poster design part of it started a bit later, around 2012. I was working as a civil engineer when the economic crisis hit in 2008, costing me my job. That was the boost I needed to really lean into the arts as a profession rather than a hobby.

Who were some of your favorite artists growing up?
I was and still am a huge fan of comic books, and the first names that I started following for my collection were comic book artists like John Byrne, Jim Lee, Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli. Then I started playing in bands (I still hold a pair of sticks whenever I can) and out of necessity started doing the artwork for my bands’ releases. Artists like Travis Smith and Dave McKean were a huge influence going into digital art, and still are. As for poster design, it’s a cliché answer but Drew Struzan is the master of us all, right? His compositions are out of this world and a big, big inspiration.

Who do you really dig these days, follow on Instagram?
There are a few artists that I absolutely love following their work. People like Chris Barnes, Steve Reeves, Si Heard, Rebeca Subversivegirl, Scott Buon and others have a great body of work that is truly inspirational and awesome follows. Check them out!

What advice would you have for budding artists today?
I do not think I am the best to give advice, as my own process and modus operandi in this area is lead by gut feeling, but one thing I truly believe and strive to do every single minute I am creating art is to do it out of a place of love for the craft. Love movies, love the projects you are involved. If you work with passion and honesty your art will reflect it and you can never, ever be wrong.

What should we be looking out for from you in the future?
You can expect more passion projects where I honor my favorite movies, a few gallery exhibition pieces as well and a few more exciting original posters for official releases by independent filmmakers!

Being a fansite, we have to ask you… What are some of your favorite movies/TV shows of all time?
I feel like this list of mine is a living, breathing entity, always evolving. My favorite movie of all time is Quentin Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction”. It changed the way I watched and appreciated movies all together, it is such an incredible film. Other of my favorites in the film category are “Ghostbusters”, “Aliens”, “T2”, “Predator”, “The Silence of the Lambs”, just to name a few! As for TV, I feel like we are living in a beautiful time to watch peak quality shows. “The Bear”, “Breaking Bad”, “Succession”, “The Expanse”, “Castlevania”, “Arcane”, “The Wire”, “The Sopranos” are just incredible and worthy of being on my TV Mount Rushmore for sure!
