Netflix has decided not to pick up its Hilary Swank-fronted space drama series, AWAY, for a second season. It's officially one and done for the show a little over a month after Season one was released on September 4, 2020.
Netflix typically makes its renewal decisions based on viewership versus cost. AWAY was likely an expensive series but, while Netflix doesn't release official numbers for their shows, AWAY spent several weeks in the top 10 Nielsen streaming viewership rankings, peaking at No 2 for its first full week of release. This is why some people wish Netflix provided more transparency when it comes to why they decide to cancel their shows because, on paper, AWAY looked like it was performing well for the streamer.
AWAY features Hilary Swank as American astronaut Emma Green. As Green prepares to lead an international crew on the first mission to Mars, she must reconcile her decision to leave behind her husband (Josh Charles) and teenage daughter (Talitha Bateman) when they need her the most. As the crew’s journey into space intensifies, their personal dynamics and the effects of being away from their loved ones back on Earth become increasingly complex. The series also stars Vivian Wu, Mark Ivanir, Ato Essandoh, and Ray Panthaki.
