When I first heard about the concept behind the upcoming film AWAKE, I was disturbed. It’s an absolute nightmare. A man is put under anesthetics for heart surgery, but although he’s paralyzed, he can still hear and feel everything. I couldn’t imagine a major motion picture being made on this subject. I use the word major because it stars Hayden Christensen, Jessica Alba, and Terrence Howard. Would the whole movie take place during the surgery, or would it focus on the trauma endured afterwards? Now that I’ve finally seen the newly-released trailer, there’s a conspiracy element present that I didn’t anticipate, and the second half does in fact appear to be taking place in his subconscious, while he tries to figure out what the hell is going on. An out-of-body experience, if you will. I still don’t know how they’re going to pull this one off exactly, but it’s easily one of the most intriguing trailers I’ve seen in a while. And using Sia’s Breathe Me as the soundtrack (remember the song that closed out SIX FEET UNDER?) doesn’t hurt. That song can make even a funeral seem emotional. The film is released on November 30 and you can check out the trailer HERE.
