Aw freak out! NBA star Giannis Antetokounmpo film in the works at Disney+

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

As a junior high, high school, and college student I was a passionate NBA fan. The Chicago Bulls and Michael Jordan were my jam and I  watched every game I could. This was not always an easy task either as this was before the days of cable offers like the NBA League Pass. However when his Airness retired I mostly lost interest in professional basketball and turned my attention more towards STAR WARS, X-MEN, and Christopher Nolan's DARK KNIGHT films. Regardless of my current personal feelings about the sport created by James Naismith, the NBA remains a juggernaut that rakes in billions of dollars a year and has massive global appeal.

One of the brighter stars of the NBA in more recent years has been the Milwaukee Bucks' power forward sensation Giannis Antetokounmpo. Dubbed "The Greek Freak," the 6 ft 11 in tall dynamo has already made three All-Star appearances and is the reigning MVP. Oh did I mention he's only twenty-four? Because yeah, he is. And now the basketball wiz is set to have his own film courtesy of Disney+.

The movie, whose working title is aptly GREEK FREAK, is currently in development at the streamer which bows on November 12. Former Village Road Show executive Bernie Goldman will produce the film and writer Arash Amel (A PRIVATE WAR) will pen the script. No word yet on who will play the Milwaukee Bucks superstar but one thing's for certain, they better be tall. In addition, it's unclear whether or not the Monstars from SPACE JAM will show up.

Antetokounmpo has had quite the interesting life. The son of Nigerian immigrants, the NBA star was born and raised in Athens, Greece. Unlike the United States however, Giannis was not automatically granted full citizenship. Which means that until he was eighteen, the dude was essentially a man without a country. Baskeball has certainly been fodder for film success with classics like HOOSIERS and even the recent comedy UNCLE DREW, so it's a safe bet this film will appeal at least to NBA fans. GREEK FREAK is just the latest on the live-action film docket for the House of Mouse streamer. Disney+ has LADY AND THE TRAMP, STARGIRL, TOGO, and TIMMY FAILURE all coming down the pike.

In the meantime if you're hungry for NBA action on the big screen, SPACE JAM 2 starring LeBron James will dribble its way into theaters July 16, 2021.
