As should come as no surprise, two of last year’s most visually striking blockbusters – AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR and SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE – dominated the VES Awards yesterday with four wins each. Each took home awards for their animated characters (AVENGERS for Thanos; SPIDER-VERSE for Miles Morales), with both winning Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature and Animated Feature, respectively.

On top of Photoreal Feature, AVENGERS won awards for animated character (Thanos), simulations (Titan), and compositing (Titan)., while SPIDER-VERSE won for animated character (Miles Morales), environment (Graphic New York City), and its simulations. While SPIDER-VERSE is not nominated at the Oscars for Best Visual Effects, AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR got a terrific boost with all these wins, giving it a strong footing going into this month’s ceremony. It would be the first superhero movie to win the award since 2004’'s SPIDER-MAN 2, but the Academy does have a knack for awarding smaller movies that use supporting visual effects effectively. In that case, Damien Chazelle’s FIRST MAN does pose a threat, and it did secure a win for Outstanding Supporting Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature.
Other winners across the movie spectrum were READY PLAYER ONE (also Oscar-nominated) and MORTAL ENGINES, with the former winning prizes for its environments (THE SHINING hotel) and virtual cinematography (New York race). On the TV end of things, Netflix swept with awards given to the sci-fi shows LOST IN SPACE and ALTERED CARBON, with Amazon taking home a prize for the show JACK RYAN.
