As we come to the end of 2018, damn near every entertainment website is busy making lists that celebrate some of pop culture's most notable triumphs throughout the year. Obviously, JoBlo is no exception, as for the past several weeks we've been pumping out lists of our favorite films and television shows like they're going out of style. Now, it appears to be Fandango's turn to chime in, seeing as the results of the site's 2019 Most Anticipated Movies Survey are in!
Occupying the top three spots for Fandango's Most Anticipated Movie of 2019 survey (in ascending order) are J.J. Abram's STAR WARS: EPISODE IX, Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck's CAPTAIN MARVEL, and, you guessed it … The Russo Brothers' AVENGERS: ENDGAME. The survey included takes from over 3,500 people, which, as you know, is not even the tip of cinema's proverbial iceberg.
“The popularity of superhero movies is at an all-time high as we head into the new year,” says Fandango managing editor Erik Davis. “Marvel fans are particularly anxious for the final ‘Avengers’ chapter after that ‘Infinity War’ cliffhanger, and are eagerly awaiting the studio’s first standalone female superhero, ‘Captain Marvel.’ It’s also clear Star Wars fans are missing their December fix, and they cannot wait for the next chapter in the Skywalker saga, ‘Episode IX.'”

How do you find these results? Personally, I'm a little surprised by Tom Hanks taking the top spot for Most Anticipated Actor. Not that the man doesn't do great work, he does, I'm just feeling a bit taken aback by him charting above actors the likes of Robert Downey Jr. Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne Johnson, just to name a few. I suppose Hanks is still cool with the kids, eh? To his credit, Hanks' Mister Rogers biopic, A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD, already sounds like it's going to draw huge numbers. Add to that the fact that TOY STORY 4 drops this coming year, and it certainly looks like 2019 could be a stellar year for THE 'BURBS and SAVING PRIVATE RYAN actor.
Another notable chart topper is CAPTAIN MARVEL, which serves as Marvel's first (and long-overdue) female-led superhero solo film. While some might not find the upcoming adventure starring Brie Larson as the "higher, faster, further" hero to be at the top of their personaly list, I do find it interesting that people are more keen to attend her debut than Todd Phillips' much-anticipated and mysterious JOKER film starring Joaquin Phoenix as the Clown Prince of Crime. Is this because there are too many Joker-related projects in the works, or is the tide finally turning for females in superhero cinema?
