Avatar: The Way of Water first reactions: James Cameron has done it again

Avatar: The Way of Water, first reactions

Whether you’ve been eager to return to Pandora or not, it’s safe to say that we’ve had an awfully long wait for Avatar: The Way of Water, the first of multiple sequels to James Cameron’s epic sci-fi saga. The first reactions to Avatar: The Way of Water have emerged and it sounds like James Cameron has done it again.

The first reactions to Avatar: The Way of Water are pretty damn positive, with most of the praise reserved for the overwhelming visuals and incredible world. The few criticisms suggest that it might be a little too big and doesn’t always succeed in juggling all the characters, but it still sounds like a movie you really need to see on the big screen. Still, it’s important to remember that these first reactions typically are overly complimentary, but it’s hard to bet against James Cameron.

Should Avatar: The Way of Water prove to be as successful as the first movie, we could have a lot more Avatar in our futures. Avatar 3 is almost complete and James Cameron has already started principal photography on Avatar 4 and has Avatar 5 in the works as well. That may not be the end as Cameron recently told THR that he has plans for Avatar 6 and 7 if there’s demand for them. “I’d be 89 by then,” Cameron said. “Obviously, I’m not going to be able to make Avatar movies indefinitely, the amount of energy required. I would have to train somebody how to do this because, I don’t care how smart you are as a director, you don’t know how to do this.

The long-awaited release of the first Avatar sequel is now just a little over a week away. Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water tells the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive,  and the tragedies they endure.  Avatar: The Way of Water will hit theaters on December 16th.
