Thirteen years after the release of Avatar, the first in a planned series of sequels has finally reached theatres – and you can find out what our own Eric Walkuski thought of Avatar: The Way of Water by watching the video embedded above, or reading the review HERE. Director James Cameron has said that Avatar: The Way of Water needs to become the third or fourth highest grossing film in history to break even, which means it will need to earn somewhere in the range of $2 billion. But cast member Edie Falco shot her scenes so long ago (four years ago), she thought the movie had already been released at some point and flopped.
During an interview on The View, Falco said (with thanks to Variety for the transcript), “I saw the first one when it was out. The second Avatar I shot four years ago. I’ve been busy and doing stuff. Somebody mentioned Avatar and I thought, ‘Oh, I guess it came out and it didn’t do very well because I didn’t hear anything about it.’ It happens! Someone recently said, Avatar is coming out,’ and I said, ‘Oh, it hasn’t come out yet?’ I will never work again because I said that.“
Falco plays the human character General Ardmore in Avatar: The Way of Water, so unfortunately she didn’t get to be “blue and very tall” in the movie.
Directed by Cameron from a screenplay he wrote with Josh Friedman, Avatar: The Way of Water has the following synopsis: Set 14 years after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water will find Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) having started a family, but when the Resources Development Administration (RDA) returns to Pandora, the family is forced to flee to the reef. Jake and Neytiri’s family includes Na’vi kids Neteyam (Jamie Flatter), Lo’ak (Britain Dalton), and Tuktirey (Trinity Bliss), but they also have Miles Socorro (Jack Champion). Also known as Spider, the young boy was born at the military base on Pandora but was too small to return to Earth so he has been raised by Jake and Neytiri.
Avatar: The Way of Water made $435 million at the global box office over its opening weekend, so that’s a nice step toward its break-even point. Have you seen the movie yet? If so, let us know what you thought of it by leaving a comment below.
