AVATAR has had three incredibly solid weekends in a row, with its numbers dropping only slightly each time from $78M to $75M to $68M, meaning good word of mouth has kept the ship floating consistently since its release. It’s “only” the 14th highest grossing movie ever in the U.S. currently, but most people don’t realize just how much the film is destroying overseas.
In fact, by the end of the day, because of its massive $700M+ foreign box office total, AVATAR is set to surpass RETURN OF THE KING (at $1.19 billion) to become the second highest grossing movie ever made, though it’s still a ways off from Cameron’s last effort, TITANIC, sitting with $1.84B worldwide. The craziest part? It’s only been twenty days since it’s release.
Realistically, I don’t think AVATAR can catch TITANIC, which is kind of a bummer, as I now have similar feelings to last year when I realized THE DARK KNIGHT wasn’t going to eclipse it either. But for one director to have the two highest earning movies ever made by this wide of a margin is absolutely insane, and it proves that James Cameron is perhaps the only director alive that you should unquestionably trust with a blank check.
