Set 14 years after the events of the first film, Avatar 2 will find Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) having started a family, but when the Resources Development Administration (RDA) returns to Pandora, the family is forced to flee to the reef. It seems that the Sully family won’t just consist of Na’vi children as Empire has revealed a new Avatar 2 image that features Spider, Jake and Neytiri’s adopted human son.
Jake and Neytiri’s family includes Na’vi kids Neteyam (Jamie Flatter), Lo’ak (Britain Dalton), and Tuktirey (Trinity Bliss), but they also have Miles Socorro (Jack Champion). Also known as Spider, the young boy was born at the military base on Pandora but was too small to return to Earth so he’s been raised by Jake and Neytiri, but it sounds like the two parents don’t quite see eye-to-eye. Avatar producer Jon Landau said, “Jake took him in but Neytiri always saw him as one of the people who destroyed her home and killed her father. So you have all these dynamics playing out.” Landau went on to say that family dynamics will play a big part in Avatar 2, and not just between the Sully’s and their adopted human son.
If you look at what Jim does in his movies, he writes in universal themes that are bigger than the genre of any one movie. This time around, we’re taking Jake and Neytiri and building the most universal theme of all around them. Which is family. Jake comes from the human world, Neytiri from the Na’vi world. So, they’re like a modern mixed-race couple, raising kids who perhaps feel they don’t belong to one world or another.
Avatar 2 will hit theaters on December 16, 2022, followed by Avatar 3 on December 20, 2023, Avatar 4 on December 18, 2026, and Avatar 5 on December 22, 2028.
