For the past several weeks, Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment have been going hard in the paint with promos for Cathy Yan's BIRDS OF PREY (AND THE FANTABULOUS EMANCIPATION OF ONE HARLEY QUINN), while also teasing some behind-the-scenes looks at Matt Reeves' highly-anticipated THE BATMAN, starring Robert Pattinson as the World's Greatest Detective. For the sake of this article, let's get into some real talk here, folks. Between the manic and wildly entertaining trailers for Birds of Prey, and new villains being announced for THE BATMAN at every turn, it's been easy to forget that Ava DuVernay is currently hard at work while preparing to bring the comic label's NEW GODS to the big screen. Which is a bit of a shame, really, considering that the Jack Kirby-created property is poised to introduce a host of new and exciting characters to the DCEU.
Thankfully, DuVernay is back in the news cycle with an intriguing update for her NEW GODS project, after letting fans know that she's taking notes with regard to some of their dream-casting ideas for the film.
Previously, DuVernay confirmed that fan-favorite villain Darkseid will indeed be making his big screen debut for the film, as will members of the Female Furies, including Big Barda. Naturally, other characters from the New Gods storyline will also be making the scene, especially now that Batman and Mister Miracle writer and former-CIA officer Tom King is co-writing the screenplay alongside DuVernay.
While combing the internet for NEW GODS fantasy castings, I'd found that fans are calling for Darkseid to be played by stars the likes of Idris Elba, Ving Rhames, Ian McShane, and even Ron Perlman. As for Scott Free, aka Mister Miracle, it would appear as if some hope that either Micheal B. Jordan or Oscar Isaac will land the role. With regard to Big Barda, it would appear that GAME OF THRONES actress Gwendoline Christie is the fan-fueled frontrunner, while I'm personally hoping that THE MANDALORIAN's Gina Carano will be considered for the part. At the end of the day, there's plenty of time to be surprised by who DuVernay and those close to the film will audition for the film's otherworldly roles. We'll be sure to update you all as soon as we know more. Until then, keep those suggestions coming – and maybe tag DuVernay in your tweets while you're at it.
