It already feels like we've been waiting forever for the third season of FX's Atlanta and now that wait is about to get even longer. Even though Atlanta was originally slated to return in January 2021, the ongoing production hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic means that work on Atlanta season 3 will not be able to resume until 2021.
John Landgraf, FX Networks and FX Productions chairman, made the announcement yesterday during a press conference. He confirmed that the Atlanta team hopes to resume production in early 2021, but even that isn't set entirely in stone. If everything goes according to plan, the season would be released later in the year but a specific release date was not provided.
The good news is that the writers on Atlanta have been productive throughout the shutdown in the last few months and have written the entirety of the show's upcoming third and fourth seasons. Season 3 and season 4 of Atlanta will be shot back-to-back, which was actually the original production plan back in 2019. Landgraf also specifically thanked "Donald Glover and his intrepid team" for working hard during the pandemic.
Atlanta stars Donald Glover as Earn, a young man who attempts to help his rapper cousin launch his career while working to improve his and his daughter's lives. The series also stars Brian Tyree Henry, LaKeith Stanfield, and Zazie Beetz. The series has been critically acclaimed since its launch in 2016 and has won two Golden Globe Award fr Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy and Best Actor – Television Series Musical or Comedy for Glover. Glover has also taken home two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series and Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series. Glover's Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series was the first ever awarded to an African American.
