Disney XD has debuted two new previews for their upcoming Avengers Assemble animated series, which is taking the place of their previous Avengers show, Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. The new show follows the lineage of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, whearas Avengers: EMH followed the lineage of the comics. It’s kind of an expected marketing move, but as a fan of the comics it’s a little disappointing. I loved that Avengers: EMH was able to bring to light many of the great storylines from the comics, including Secret Invasion, Winter Soldier, the Kree/Skrull War, and many more. Sure, they modified aspects of them, but to see them in action was pretty damn cool.
Avengers Assemble looks to tap into new viewers who were fans of Joss Whedon‘s THE AVENGERS and establish a core audience built of both fans and non-fans of the comics. Seems reasonable, but I’m hoping it doesn’t “dumb down” the cooler comic roots for the sake of appealing to everyone.
Assemble:
Here’s a synopsis for the first two preview episodes:
Captain America is apparently destroyed by Red Skull, so Iron Man re-unites the team to try and avenge his friend and stop Red Skull’s army. In the second part, Red Skull steals Tony Stark’s armor, and the Avengers must galvanize the team to stop him and M.O.D.O.K. from destroying New York City.
Avengers Assemble premieres on Disney XD officially on Sunday, July 7 at 11 a.m. ET, but you can catch the hour-long preview on Sunday, May 26 at 11 a.m. ET
