"Still waters run deep". That's how Zack Snyder described Dave Bautista as an action hero. What he means is that despite his hulking look, Bautista is among the most vulnerable action leads in recent years. Unlike other icons, who rarely allow themselves to take their lumps on-screen, Bautista has always embraced the vulnerable side of his characters, something which has made him a favorite of everyone from Denis Villeneuve to Snyder himself.
We recently got an opportunity to sit down with both men. Snyder, as always, is a great interview, describing why he returned to the zombie genre after a decade and a half, and what went into optimizing Army of the Dead for home viewing. But, what I found most intriguing were his thoughts on Bautista.
Thus, when I got the chance to talk to Bautista, rather than pump him for information on Guardians of the Galaxy or Dune, topics that have been well-covered, I asked him to expand on Snyder's thoughts, and what makes him unique as far as action stars go. While the interview was brief, I thought it was pretty interesting and I gotta say – I love Bautista's acting.
