Army of Thieves, a prequel to Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead, is set to join its companion film on the Netflix streaming service on October 29th, and at some point we have an animated series called Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas to look forward to as well. Beyond that, Snyder is also working on Army of the Dead 2 with screenwriter Shay Hatten, who co-wrote the first film with him. The development of the sequel was confirmed back in July, and now Snyder has casually revealed that the title is not Army of the Dead 2. It’s Planet of the Dead.
Speaking with Inverse, Snyder hinted that Matthias Schweighöfer may reprise his Army of Thieves and Army of the Dead role of Ludwig Dieter in Planet of the Dead, and that Schweighöfer’s Army of Thieves co-star Nathalie Emmanuel (as a character named Gwendoline) might get mixed up in the zombie action with him. This quote won’t mean much other than SPOILERS if you haven’t watched Army of the Dead, but here it is:
But the real adventure would be to see what happened to (Ludwig Dieter) when that safe door closed. Did he get killed by Zeus or not? What happened? We don’t see him die on camera, and there’s still some time left. I won’t tell you what happens in Army of the Dead 2 — aka Planet of the Dead — but let’s just say that there’s a chance Dieter survives. And there’s a chance that brush with death would have caused him to want to find a jailed Gwendoline.”
Zombies were contained in the quarantined city of Las Vegas in Army of the Dead, but it sounds like things will get more apocalyptic in the sequel, judging by the title Planet of the Dead.
