Army of the Dead 2 could fall into the sci-fi action genre

Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead wasn’t just a straight zombie film. Playing with different genres has always been part of Snyder’s plan for the franchise, and that will continue with the upcoming Army of the Dead 2.

While speaking with Variety, Zack Snyder explained that he wants to explore other genres and teased that co-writer Shay Hatten and himself have been thinking about turning Army of the Dead 2 into a sci-fi action movie.

Shay and I have been talking about the straight sequel to “Army of the Dead” being possibly a sci-fi actioner with horror elements. So that’s a fun genre, probably with a heist at its center.

“I love the genre aspect,” Snyder continued, speaking of Army of the Dead 2. “It’s rare, and maybe unprecedented, that there’s a cinematic universe where the cinematic part of it is front and center. The deconstruction of different genres is actually part of the way. It’s very self-aware. I think that we as an audience and as filmmakers are ready and educated. We’re standing by to have fun with the genres we love and deconstruct them, almost from a self-aware cinematic angle, which makes this universe of movies really interesting. It’s movies for people who love movies, without letting anyone off the hook as far as the drama and suspense. And I promise there will be zombies.”

The Army of the Dead franchise is quickly growing, first with the recently released Army of Thieves and followed by the Army of the Dead animated series. “We’re doing the animated series, which will come out next year,” Snyder said. “The animated series very much delves deeply into the ‘why’ of the zombie apocalypse and where the zombies come from exactly. I think the time loops, portals, doorways to other realms, things of that nature, are very much in play. So all of those clues that Dieter gives us are very much part of how we continue to spiral out the ‘Army of the Dead’ universe.” You can check out a review of Army of Thieves from our own Chris Bumbray right here.
