In November 2008, a series of coordinated terrorist attacks took place in Mumbai which lasted four days and left close to 200 dead and more than 300 wounded, so naturally, we're about to get a film chronicling those horrific events. Directed and co-written by Anthony Maras, HOTEL MUMBAI stars Dev Patel (LION) as Arjun, a waiter at the Taj Hotel who risks his life in order to keep everyone safe when terrorists lay seige on the famed hotel. HOTEL MUMBAI also stars Armie Hammer (CALL ME BY YOUR NAME), Jason Isaacs (Star Trek: Discovery), Anupam Kher (THE BIG SICK), and Nazanin Boniadi (Homeland).
Our own Chris Bumbray caught the film when it debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, and, despite a few missteps, called it one of the biggest surprises of the festival. In his review, Bumbray added that HOTEL MUMBAI was an "engaging, propulsive account of a horrific event — one which deserves to be seen. It’s as worthy a film on artistic merits alone as anything else I saw there."
The official synopsis for HOTEL MUMBAI:
A gripping true story of humanity and heroism, HOTEL MUMBAI vividly recounts the 2008 siege of the famed Taj Hotel by a group of terrorists in Mumbai, India. Refusing to leave their guests, the renowned chef Hemant Oberoi (Anupam Kher) and a waiter (Academy Award-Nominee Dev Patel, Slumdog Millionaire) choose to risk their lives to keep everyone safe. As the world watches on, a desperate couple (Armie Hammer, Call Me By Your Name and Nazanin Boniadi, “Homeland") is forced to make unthinkable sacrifices to protect their newborn child.
HOTEL MUMBAI will hit theaters on March 29, 2019.
