Anthony Hopkins and Jeremy Strong are joining the cast of Armageddon Time. The film, which also stars Anne Hathaway, and newcomers Banks Tepeta, Jaylin Webb, and Ryan Sell, is written and directed by James Gray (Ad Astra, The Lost City of Z). It’s a coming-of-age story inspired by Gray’s life in a pre-Reagan America set in Queens, New York.
In addition to doing some heavy lifting as the project’s writer and director, Gray will also produce with Anthony Katagas, Marc Butan, and Rodrigo Teixeira. Meanwhile, Lourenço Sant’Anna and Rodrigo Gutierrez will executive produce. Oscar Isaac, Robert De Niro, Donald Sutherland, and Cate Blanchett are also set to star. Blanchett will play Maryanne Trump.
At 83-years-old, Hopkins is still lightning up the screen with an impressive amount of projects to his name. He recently wrapped production on Florian Zeller’s The Son. The hard-hitting drama revolves around Peter, his new partner Emma, and their child. In the film, the trio finds their lives thrown into disarray when Peter’s ex-wife Kate turns up with their teenage son, Nicholas. Hugh Jackman, Vanessa Kirby, Laura Dern, William Hope, Akie Kotabe, and Zen McGrath also star.
As for Strong, he recently scored an Emmy for best actor in a drama series for his role in HBO’s Succession. The fan-favorite series is getting ready to launch its third season on October 14th on HBO. Our own Alex Maidy recently had the pleasure of reviewing the new season and gave it an outstanding 9/10 in his write-up. In his review, Alex calls the new season “painfully funny,” but he also notes that the show doubles down on its intensity throughout the new season. That sounds like a mighty good mix to me, and I’m sure that everyone is hyped to enjoy the new episodes.
Gray’s Armageddon Time drama is bound to strike a chord with those who bore witness to Reagan’s presidency and all the sea changes associated with it. I was only a child when Reagan was in power, but I certainly can appreciate how different the world felt way back then.
