What do the films ROCK OF AGES and CBGB share in common aside from a story about rock and roll and the inclusion of Malin Akerman? Not much. Where ROCK OF AGES was a musical that was painful to sit through, CBGB looks like a well made ode to rock n’ roll featuring a damn fine cast.
CBGB stars Alan Rickman as Hilly Krystal, the man who opened the iconic hotspot that showcased a reported 50,000 bands including Talking Heads, Blondie, The Ramones, Dead Boys, The Police, Iggy Pop and Patti Smith Group. While the venue closed in 2006, the famous logo and history of the club live on.
Director Randall Miller reunites with his NOBEL SON and BOTTLE SHOCK star Rickman for this film which looks to be just the right amounts of studio glossy and indie credible. Rickman shares zero resemblance to Professor Snape despite the cast also serving as a HARRY POTTER reunion with Rupert Grint appearing as Cheetah Crome from the band Dead Boys. Aside from those actors and Akerman, the cast also features Ashley Greene, Johnny Galecki, Ryan Hurst, Justin Bartha, Donal Logue and Bradley Whitford.
CBGB still doesn’t have a concrete release date but should hit theaters sometime later this year. Until then, enjoy the trailer.
