Word comes today that Archie Comics (yes, they still very much exist) has signed with CAA with the goal of creating “branded entertainment opportunities” in television and film. It may seem odd that a large organization is signing with an agency like this to create “branding opportunities,” but these days it’s standard practice, and you may recall hearing similar news recently about Mattel hooking up with CAA to compete with the onslaught of Hasbro toy/game movies currently plaguing our screens.
So what does this mean? Well, Archie Comics is more than just Betty, Veronica and Jughead. The brand also owns Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Josie and the Pussycats, Cosmo the Merry Martian, Super Duck and Dotty and Ditto, meaning any of those could make it to the big screen in the coming years. This would seem to be slightly better than toy/board game feature films, seeing as these series have you know, actual characters and storylines and all that.
The question now is how long will it take for the first of these projects to be announced, and what will it be? I could easily see most of these titles being turned into family friendly 3D-fests, but I’d be most intrigued to see what an Archie and Friends movie might looks like.
