After many rumors and reports circulating around the web over the years, a fourth film in THE MATRIX series is officially on, and now it has been confirmed that AQUAMAN actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has been cast in the lead role. Sources told Variety that Wachowski had been secretly looking at actors to lead the new movie over the last week or so before deciding Mateen was the man for the job. Production is reportedly expected to kick off early next year, with a script from Wachowski, Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell.
Warner Bros., the studio behind THE MATRIX, is no stranger to the talent of Mateen. The studio cast him as the villain David Kane/Black Manta in last year's blockbuster AQUAMAN, which went on to gross over $1 billion around the world, making it their biggest superhero movie ever. Mateen was also featured in another hit this year, the horror movie US from director Jordan Peele, and also has the movies THE GREATEST SHOWMAN and BAYWATCH on his credits.

Of course, details are being kept under wraps for now, but reports had been making the rounds for some time about a fourth MATRIX movie, some of them hinting at one point that Michael B. Jordan was eyed to star. Warner Bros. confirmed the new movie was in the works with some of the key players in front of and behind the camera eyed to return, and given the reported start date, it seems they're eager to get going.
