Development on NEW MUTANTS has been underway for some time, but the X-MEN spinoff is now steadily moving forwards and THR reports that Anya Taylor-Joy (SPLIT) and Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) have officially signed on to star in the film. This isn't exactly breaking news as we've spoken of their involvement on numerous occasions, but it is nice to have confirmation as well as know that NEW MUTANTS is finally on the way.
The X-MEN spinoff is set to be directed by Josh Boone (THE FAULT IN OUR STARS), who also co-wrote the script alongside Knate Gwaltney, and THR states that production on NEW MUTANTS is expected to get underway in early July. The flick is set to focus on the "angst-driven adventures of a diverse group of teens" which includes Danielle Moonstar, Wolfsbane, Sunspot, Cannonball and Magik, with an alien named Warlock in the mix as well. Anya Taylor-Joy is set to play Magik, the sister of Colossus who has a healthy knowledge of sorcery and uses teleportation discs to travel, and Maisie Williams will play Wolfsbane, a young mutant who struggles to reconcile her religious beliefs with her ability to turn into a wolf. All things we've known before, but Josh Boone was apparently only able to get the actresses officially on-board once NEW MUTANTS was finally greenlit.
As for other members of the NEW MUTANTS cast, THR's Borys Kit claims that Nat Wolff, who has long been rumoured to be playing Cannonball, isn't involved with the film. It was also rumoured that James McAvoy would be reprising his role of Professor X for NEW MUTANTS, but apparently, that won't be happening either. Things could always change, but that's where we're sitting right now.
NEW MUTANTS is set for a April 13, 2018 release.
