Antoine Fuqua says his Scarface remake is more relevant than ever right now

Al Pacino Scarface Antoine Fuqua

Antoine Fuqua's remake of THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN hits theaters in just a few days but the director already has his eye on a remake of Brian De Palma's SCARFACE. The 1983 crime drama which starred an over the top Al Pacino was itself a remake of a 1932 film which went by the same name, but Antoine Fuqua recently told Fandango that the story of an immigrant fighting for his version of the American Dream is still just as relevant than ever, if not more so.

I read the script they have and it's actually really interesting and very timely. We're dealing with a lot of stuff now coming out of Mexico. And again, we still have those issues dealing with the "American Dream", and the fact that the game is rigged, right? It's not really an even playing field, but the promise is that it is. The promise is that everyone gets a fair shot, but that's not always the case. So that's always relevant, and right now with what's happening in Mexico, which is where [the main character] comes from — he comes out of Mexico — that's relevant, especially when you've got people talking about putting up walls and other kinds of stuff. We're still dealing with immigration, we're still dealing with what would turn someone into Scarface.

I typically don't have a problem with remakes so long as they offer something new and don't just regurgitate the same story with a new cast (complete with a couple of awkward winks to the original), but if Antoine Fuqua really can put a fresh spin on the SCARFACE tale, I say go for it. When asked whether Denzel Washington or Ethan Hawke will be involved with SCARFACE, Fuqua said "so far, no, we still need to do the casting and I have to have a couple more meetings on it. I would love to, though! I just haven't wrapped my head around it yet." What say you folks, do we need another SCARFACE remake and is Antoine Fuqua the man to do it?

THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN hits theaters on September 23rd but before you head out for some wild west action, make sure to check out a review from our own Chris Bumbray!
