Antoine Fuqua didn't reveal any other details about the project, but in an interview with Variety the director did confirm he will be teaming up with his THE EQUALIZER star Denzel Washington for a remake of John Sturges' THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN.
A remake of THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN has been in the works for years, and the last writer to take a stab at the script for it was THE BLIND SIDE and THE ALAMO scribe John Lee Hancock. It's not clear if Antoine Fuqua will direct the movie from Hancock's script, or if another writer will be hired to develop a new script for the planned film.
I know most of you are kind of sick of remakes/reboots/re-whatevers, but I'm excited to see how Antoine Fuqua will do behind the camera for a Western, especially with Denzel Washington as a gunslinger. If their THE EQUALIZER does well at the box office (and many expect it will), I have a feeling MGM will want to do THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN remake sooner than later.
Antoine Fuqua's THE EQUALIZER (you can read Chris Bumbray's review from TIFF here) will be in theaters on September 26, 2014.
