Anthony Mackie on how his Captain America will be different from Chris Evans

Anthony Mackie, Captain America: New World Order

Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) passed on his shield to Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) in Avengers: Endgame, bringing Captain America’s arc to a well-deserved conclusion. The events of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier found Wilson taking on the mantle of Captain America as it explored the implications of a Black man being given that role. Anthony Mackie will be bringing his version of Cap to the big screen with Captain America: New World Order, but there are bound to be comparisons between the two heroes.

Anthony Mackie recently spoke with Men’s Journal, where he explained how his version of Captain America will be quite different from Chris Evans’.

Mine will be different. What you have to realize about Sam—he’s a superhero who is not really a superhero. There’s no secret serum. There’s no this or that. I just have wings on my suit that I got from the military. So everything that I do, I do as a common man. When you see me, you might think, “Oh, I can be a superhero, too.” Whereas if you look at Hulk or any of those guys, you can’t compete.

Since first appearing in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Sam Wilson has become a valuable part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Wilson has gone on to appear in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame, but it’s exciting to see him take on a much bigger role with Captain America: New World Order. Aside from Captain America, Anthony Mackie added that the hero he most wanted to be as a kid was… Hulk. “Since I was a kid, I’d always wanted to be The Incredible Hulk,” Mackie said. “But now, if I could play another superhero, it would be Panthro from ThunderCats—the blue dude. Yeah, I’m big on ThunderCats—that’s my one superhero. If they ever make that movie and I’m not him, I’m shutting that shit down.

The new Captain America movie will include several characters from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, such as Carl Lumbly as Isaiah Bradley and Danny Ramirez as Joaquin Torres. The film will also star Shira Haas as Sabra and Tim Blake Nelson as The Leader, who hasn’t been seen since The Incredible Hulk in 2008. Julius Onah (The Cloverfield Paradox) will direct the film from a script penned by Malcolm Spellman and Dalan Musson. Captain America: New World Order will hit theaters on May 3, 2024.
