Yesterday saw the release of a teaser trailer for THE NEW POPE, a follow-up season to HBO's THE YOUNG POPE starring Jude Law and John Malkovich as opposing men of the cloth. Today, Netflix has clapped back with a trailer for THE TWO POPES, an upcoming film centered around dueling devote members of the Catholic Church.
Based on real events, THE TWO POPES stars Anthony Hopkins as Pope Benedict XVI and Jonathan Pryce as Pope Francis. The story takes place during the time when Pope Benedict XVI was preparing to transfer power over to Cardinal Bergoglio, a reformist and progressive figure later known as Pope Francis. As the film continues, it explores the pair's unique relationship after a potentially devastating secret is shared – one that could destabilize the Catholic Church as we know it. What follows is a struggle for power between tradition and reform unlike many have seen in generations.
The film is set to hit theaters on November 27, with plans for a Netflix premiere on December 20. THE TWO POPES will also see its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival this weekend, with an addition festival screening planned for the Toronto International Film Festival in September.
Directing THE TWO POPES is THE CONSTANT GARDENER and CITY OF GOD helmer Fernando Meirelles from a script penned by Anthony McCarten (BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY, DARKEST HOUR). Starring alongside Hopkins and Pryce in the feature are Juan Minujin, Sidney Cole, Thomas D Williams, Federico Torre, and Pablo Trimarchi, among others.
