Ant-Man sequel will explore different generations of Ant-Man and The Wasp

Despite losing Edgar Wright to those dreaded "creative differences" only months before production began, ANT-MAN actually managed to stick the landing and wound up being quite a lot of fun, at least, that's how I view it. Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) and Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) will be returning for the upcoming ANT-MAN AND THE WASP, but with its release date less than four months away, it's surprising that we haven't heard all that much about it, but I suppose that a little film by the name of AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR might be more important at the moment.

While speaking with Empire (via CBM), ANT-MAN AND THE WASP director Peyton Reed spilled a few new details about the film, including why it was so important for The Wasp to join Ant-Man in the title of the sequel.

It was important to me, in this movie called Ant-Man and The Wasp, that she's not a supporting character. She's a lead character. She's become a fully-formed hero. She really was, along with Sue Storm of the Fantastic Four, one of the first female Marvel heroes. I feel a certain responsibility with The Wasp.

As we know from the first ANT-MAN movie, neither Scott or Hope are the first ones to take on the mantle of Ant-Man and The Wasp, as Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) and Janet van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer) had previously suited up as the costumed heroes, and Peyton Reed said that the sequel will be exploring "the different generations of Ant-Man and The Wasp," which he thought was "an interesting thing we haven't seen in a Marvel movie." Janet van Dyne was lost in the Quantum Realm years ago while on a mission with Pym, but with Michelle Pfeiffer set to play Janet in ANT-MAN AND THE WASP, it seems that we're due for a reunion. Is it too much to ask for a scene in which all four characters are suited up?

Much like the first film, ANT-MAN AND THE WASP will have its share of comedy, but many have speculated that the result of Scott Lang and Hope van Dyne teaming up will give Marvel its first romantic comedy, but Peyton Reed isn't about to slap that label on his film. "It's not a romantic comedy," Reed said. "The idea might enter Hope's brain: does she need Scott Lang in her life?"

The official synopsis for ANT-MAN AND THE WASP:

From the Marvel Cinematic Universe comes “Ant Man and the Wasp,” a new chapter featuring heroes with the astonishing ability to shrink. In the aftermath of “Captain America: Civil War,” Scott Lang grapples with the consequences of his choices as both a Super Hero and a father. As he struggles to rebalance his home life with his responsibilities as Ant-Man, he’s confronted by Hope van Dyne and Dr. Hank Pym with an urgent new mission. Scott must once again put on the suit and learn to fight alongside the Wasp as the team works together to uncover secrets from the past.

ANT-MAN AND THE WASP will hit theaters on July 6, 2018.
