Marvel has been on their best hit streak yet with BLACK PANTHER and AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR, both becoming two of the biggest movies ever made. The hits will keep coming with ANT-MAN AND THE WASP this weekend, and though it won’t reach the heights of the previous two it’s looking to have big weekend itself with an estimated $80 million on the horizon.
Variety is reporting that the movie will easily win the weekend against still-strong June releases like INCREDIBLES 2 and JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM with that estimated sum, perhaps going as low as $70 million. Either way, the movie will trounce over the first ANT-MAN’s $57 million total, which is expected given the character’s familiarity with audiences and heat coming off the previous MCU movies this year.
Should the movie open well it will likely go on to beat the previous film’s complete run ($180 million domestic; $519 million global) and pass $200 million. Helping the cause are the great reviews, with the Rotten Tomatoes score currently at 84%, which is near the 83% of the first movie.
Well, I don't think anyone was expecting the movie to be anything less than another hit for Marvel Studios. Not only do their sequels often post better results than the movie's previous outing, but people are probably dying to see how this connects to INFINITY WAR. Does Ant-Man or Wasp turn to ash at the end, or is there a tease with more Thanos somewhere in the end credits? We have no idea, but maybe the quest for answers will fuel the box office even more!
ANT-MAN AND THE WASP is set for this Friday!
