Another videogame adaptation on the way, this time for The Division

Another day, another videogame adaptation. Don't get me wrong, I have faith we'll get a great videogame movie someday, and hell, I'd argue we already did with MORTAL KOMBAT and SILENT HILL. But with the proliferation of titles, it's still astonishing how many of them are not only bad, but f*cking terrible.

This brings us to the latest one, Ubisoft's THE DIVISION, which is described as "a third-person shooter is set in a dystopian New York City in the aftermath of a smallpox pandemic. The player, who is an agent of the Strategic Homeland Division, commonly referred to as simply “The Division,” is tasked with helping to rebuild the Division’s operations in Manhattan, investigating the nature of the outbreak and combating criminal activity in its wake."

Well, at least that sounds like it has a story (unlike, say, something like TETRIS), and doesn't seem to be as convoluted or mired in mythology as something like Ubisoft's other game franchise, ASSASSIN'S CREED. So that's already a step in its favor. Also a step in its favor? It seems to be stacked with talent, like director Stephen Gaghan (the amazing SYRIANA), and awesome actors like Jake Gyllenhaal (no stranger to videogame adaptations) and Jessica Chastain, which…wait, talented director, stacked cast, Ubisoft, where did I hear all that before? NOOOOO!!!!

Anyway, here's what director Gaghan had to say about the film:

I’m excited to work with Ubisoft Motion Pictures and collaborate with their team at Massive Entertainment to bring ‘The Division’ to the big screen. They’re great guys, exceptionally creative, and willing to take risks…The game has been an enormous success, in large part due to the visual landscape they created, their vision of a mid-apocalyptic Manhattan. It’s immersive, wonderfully strange, and yet familiar, filled with possibilities. It’s also remarkable to be able to collaborate with Jessica Chastain and Jake Gyllenhaal early in the process. We all feel the story Ubisoft created is more relevant than ever.

Well, at least he's optimistic.

Anyway, like Gaghan said, it's very early in the process, so there's no firm release date yet. Though hopefully when it does come out, it can break the terrible videogame movie curse, which seems to be what everyone says everytime one of these things come out.
