Seriously how many characters can you squeeze into one film?
Blastr is reporting that while answering a question for a fan on his Twitter actor Adan Canto revealed that he will be appearing in X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST as Sunspot. The tweet has since been deleted but obviously it's out there now. It's been rumored that Canto would appear in the movie for a little while but there hasn't been any news on who he would be. Adan Canto isn't a well known actor outside Mexico but he might look familiar if you're a fan of the television show The Following on Fox.
Roberto da Costa aka Sunspot is a mutant from Brazil that can absorb solar energy that can be used for physical strength. He is also capable of flying, projecting intense heat waves as well as shooting dark solar plasma blasts from his hands. Here's a short bio and description from Wikipedia:
Sunspot is Roberto da Costa, a Brazilian male, born and raised in Rio de Janeiro. He is the son of wealthy businessman Emmanuel da Costa and archeologist Nina da Costa. The relationship between Roberto and his father resembles more closely one of best friends than father and son. Nonetheless, Emmanuel constantly pushes his son to reach for both his physical and intellectual limits. Thanks to his father's encouragement, Roberto rose to the position of star soccer player at school, and was considered by recruiters for the Olympic Games.
Shortly before his fourteenth birthday (as best can be determined; there are conflicting references) Roberto was playing a soccer game with his team (the Thunderbolts) against their arch-rivals, the Dynamos. Racist members of the Dynamos assaulted Roberto during the game, and in response Roberto took matters into his own hands, initiating a fight on the field. While taking a brutal beating, his mutant powers manifested, suddenly transforming him into a creature of solid black solar energy. Surprised and terrified, people abandoned the stadium, and only his girlfriend, Juliana Sandoval, refused to abandon him.
There are plenty of people that don't see the amount of mutants in X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST as a risk but I certainly do. Yes the comics are chock full of mutants and the story being told in the film needs a pretty big cast. But it just seems like it's getting to the point that most of these characters might show up for a scene and then disappear, similar to what happened in the God awful MORTAL KOMBAT: ANNIHILATION. Sure fans of the comic would love to see some of their favorite mutants that aren't top tier characters in the film but not if they're going to be wasted in a scene that's pretty much there to show off yet another mutant and nothing more. As I've said before, I'm not trashing on X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST but I am worried because I do want this storyline to be told and I want it to be told well.
