The first BLAIR WITCH PROJECT was a landmark film that would pave the way for various copycat movies for the next fifteen years. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience watching the movie and have no shame in calling it great. It’s only easy for people to look back on it now and suggest it was silly or dismiss it as another shaky cam experiment. Saying that of course, the movie made $250 million on a budget of $60,000 and its inevitable sequel captivated cheap bins everywhere. Now comes word that there might be another story to tell with this series.
According to the film’s co-director Eduardo Sanchez, talks are ongoing with Lionsgate and a third film is "inevitable." Sanchez was recently talking to Dread Central about his new film, EXISTS, and said the following about a possible BLAIR WITCH PROJECT 3:
We have been talking to Lionsgate and there has been a little bit of movement but nothing is concrete. The film seems inevitable to me, but really it’s just a matter of it being the right time. I’m thinking it’s going to happen sooner than later at this point, but I always say that. There’s always rumblings and certain ideas being pushed around and such. While I don’t have anything firm to talk about now, it wouldn’t surprise me if something happened within the next year or two.
I doubt they will try and do what they did with the sequel and have more fans of the original movie investigate what happened. I could see a prequel or hell, bring back the original cast and have them resurface with no memory of what happened. All our problems are solved! Cut. Print. Crap.
