As someone who was a Goth in high school during the early-to-mid 2000s, and who dated his share of Goth girls, I am more than vaguely aware of Anne Rice and her series of vampire novels (as well as TWILIGHT, but that's a different story). In fact, my first real date was to take a girl to see QUEEN OF THE DAMNED, which – for all its faults – at least had a killer soundtrack.
So I can't deny that my nostalgia senses are tingling when hearing the news that Anne Rice has regained the rights to her VAMPIRE CHRONICLES novels from Universal, and is hoping to produce a GAME OF THRONES-esque TV series based on them. While never a huge fan of the novels (even if I loved the INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE movie), nor really vampires in general (save for maybe BLADE and the first UNDERWORLD), I can't deny that I'm intrigued.
Anyway, here's Anne Rice herself giving us the news via her personal Facebook page:
The theatrical rights to the Vampire Chronicles are once again in my hands, free and clear! I could not be more excited about this! — A television series of the highest quality is now my dream for Lestat, Louis, Armand, Marius and the entire tribe. In this the new Golden Age of television, such a series is THE way to let the entire story of the vampires unfold. — My son Christopher Rice and I will be developing a pilot script and a detailed outline for an open ended series, faithfully presenting Lestat’s story as it is told in the books, complete with the many situations that readers expect to see. We will likely begin with “The Vampire Lestat” and move on from there.
Sounds good to me. And, despite my apathy to the series proper, I do agree it's much easier to span different eras and multiple intersecting stories in an epic TV series than it is on film, where everything has to be condensed, focuesed, and simplified. So, good luck to her, I say!
But what do you guys think? Any fans of Rice's work? And what do you feel about the idea of a Lestat TV show?
