Anne Hathaway-led Sesame Street movie pushed to Summer 2021

A new report hailing from The Wrap suggests that it might take Warner Bros. and MGM a bit longer to figure out how to get to Sesame Street. According to the outlet, the movie based on the timeless children's education program has been moved from a January 2021 release to June 4, 2021. While five months isn't that long of a delay, it's worth noting that this is the second time that filming for the project has needed to be rescheduled.

Directing the SESAME STREET film is PORTLANDIA creator Jonathan Krisel, which has OCEAN'S 8 and THE DARK KNIGHT RISES actress Anne Hathaway cast in the lead role. Making music arrangements for the puppet-populated project is EIGHTH GRADE filmmaker Bo Burham, while Mike Rosolio has been named as the writer to make the most recent pass on the SESAME STREET script. Meanwhile, Shawn Levy and Michael Aguilar will produce.

Seeing as little else is known about Krisel's SESAME STREET feature at this time, this affords me the opportunity to remind you of just how amazing director Ken Kwapis' 1985 family comedy, FOLLOW THAT BIRD, truly is. In the beloved film, Big Bird is sent to live far from his Sesame Street home after an ornary social worker finds the friendly neighborhood unfit for his bird-oriented needs. Unhappy with his circumstances, Big Bird runs away from his new foster home, which raises the alarm back on Sesame Street. Before long, Oscar the Grouch, the Count, Grover, Bert and Ernie, and many of Sesame's other residents embark on a cross-country adventure to find their missing friend.

Back in the day, I straight up wore two VCRs down to the bone while engaging in repeat viewings of FOLLOW THAT BIRD. Complete with joyous sing-a-longs, mild amounts of danger, and enough guest stars to make The Muppet Show jealous, FOLLOW THAT BIRD was at one time the height of Sesame Street-related cinema. I'm not about to tell anyone how to parent, but if your kids dig Sesame Street, and you don't own a copy of FOLLOW THAT BIRD, well … you done messed up. Make it happen. La la la!
