Recent rumblings at the head of Disney Studios was sure to leave a bunch of movie projects in limbo, but ditching a David Mamet-written Anne Frank movie? That one sounded like a surefire Oscar contender to me.
Mamet’s script turned out to be not a straight re-telling of the story but an “exploration of antisemitism movie set in contemporary times”. Whatever that means, it scared the crap out of the Mouse who’d much rather play with Marvel action figures from now on.
According to The Wrap, Disney ultimately rejected it as too dark and scary. In other words, they don’t see it making oodles of money so out you go. Hopefully Mamet will up and go sell the thing to someone else. Always Be Closing, ‘bro.
